Highlights: Quad-port 10GbE SFP+ server adapters PCI Express (PCIe) v3.0, 8.0 GT/s, x8 lanes SFP+ Connectivity PXE,iSCSI boot Network Virtualization IEEE 802.1q and 10G Ethernet specification compliance Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) support Excellent small packet performance for network appliances and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Low Profile and Full-Height bracket ATTENTION: Only works ONLY with INTEL-compatible SFP+ modules, see accessories. Overview: ALL0141-4SFP+-10G is ALLNET a new generation of high- performance server adapter, based on the Intel XL710-BM1 controller. The Server Adapter addresses the demanding needs of the next-generation agile data center by providing unmatched features for both server and network virtualization, flexibility for LAN and SAN networks and proven, reliable performance. The ALL0141-4SFP+-10G adapter delivers superior performance in a PCI Express v3.0 x8 slot. Optimized performance vectors and key uses include: Small Packet Performance: Achieves wire-rate throughput on smaller payload sizes (>128 Bytes for 40 GbE and >64 Bytes for 10 GbE) Bulk Transfer Performance: Delivers line-rate performance with low CPU usage for large application buffers Network Virtualization: Network virtualization overlay offloads including Geneve, VXLAN, and NVGRE Storage Performance: Enables competitive performance with native OS drivers and intelligent offload for NAS (NFS, SMB), and SAN (iSCSI and FCoE) Key Features Quad –Port 10GbE Server Adapter PCI Express* (PCIe) 3.0, x8 Exceptional Low Power Adapters Network Virtualization offloads including Geneve, VXLAN and NVGRE Intel® Ethernet Flow Director for hardware based application traffic steering Intel® Data Plane Developer Kit (DPDK) optimized for efficient packet processing Excellent small packet performance for network appliances and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Intelligent offloads to enable high performance with Intel® Xeon® processor-based servers I/O virtualization innovations for maximum performance in a virtualized server Unified networking providing a single wire support for LAN and storage: NAS (SMB, NFS) and SAN (iSCSI, FCoE) A Complete, Unified Networking Solution Converging data and storage onto one fabric eliminates the need for multiple adapters, cables and switches. Furthermore both 10 and 40 gigabit Ethernet provides the bandwidth to converge these multiple fabrics onto a single wire. A key capability that makes all this possible is traffic class separation provided by Data Center Bridging (DCB) providing a one-wire solution with virtual pipes for the different classes of traffic: Data: Best effort delivery of standard LAN traffic Storage: Lossless network for FCoE and iSCSI Management: Guaranteed connectivity of data center IP management Power Savings Power efficiency is critical to IT specialists as energy consumption is a real OpEx concern. Lowest Power Consumption The new generation of ALL0141-4SFP+-10G adapters are power misers. They deliver double the throughput with only half the power of the previous Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) Reduces power consumption during periods of low data activity. Energy is used to maintain the physical layer transmitters in a "ready state” to transmit data on the wire. During periods of low data traffic, EEE sends a low-power- idle signal to put the transmitters into a "low power state” saving power and cost. When data needs to be sent, EEE sends a normal idle signal to wake up the transmit system before data is due to be sent so there is no degradation of performance. Server Virtualization With the INTEL Virtualization Technology (VT), the ALL0141-4SFP+-10Gadapter deliver outstanding I/O performance in virtualized server environments. They reduce I/O bottlenecks by providing intelligent offloads for networking traffic per virtual machine (VM), enabling near- native performance and VM scalability. The host-based virtualization technologies supported by Intel VT include: VMDq for Emulated Path: Adapter-based VM Queue sorting enabling efficient hypervisor-based switching SR-IOV for Direct Assignment: Adapter-based isolation and switching for various virtual station instances enabling optimal CPU usage ind virtualized environments. Additionally, ALL0141-4SFP+-10G provide Virtual Bridging support that delivers both host-side and switch-side control and management of virtualized I/O as well as the following modes of virtualized operation: VEPA : IEEE 802.1Qbg support for Virtual Ethernet Port Aggregator VEB: Virtual Ethernet Bridge support via Intel® VT Network Virtualization Network virtualization is the next big trend in creating an agile data center. The ALL0141-4SFP+-10Gadapter is ready to help you take that next step. VXLAN, NVGRE, GENEVE Offloads: With Intel Virtualization Technologyperformance for overlay networks. With these offloads it is possible to distribute network traffic across CPU cores. At the same time XL710 offloads LSO, GSO, and check-sum from the host software reducing CPU overhead. Intel® Ethernet Flow Director Flow Director is an advanced traffic steering capability built into the XL710 controller. It consists of a large number of flow affinity filters that direct receive packets by their flows to queues for classification, load balancing, and matching between flows and CPU cores. It eliminates context switching required within the CPU. As a result, Flow Director significantly increasing the number of transactions per second and reduces latency for cloud applications like Memcached. Intelligent Offloads The Intel Xeon processor family has demonstrated increased computing performance and increased integration of key server subsystems generation after generation. To offload is to leverage the ever-escalating computing power of the Xeon processor where appropriate and implementing complementary accelerations in the network controller—this is what Intel refers to as ”intelligent offloads.” By employing a balanced hybrid of compute and offload, intelligent offloads are able to achieve the optimized point of performance and efficiency. This is most notably observed in the following usage models: TCP Stateless Offloads: Demonstrates leading performance vs. TOE solutions without restricting feature usage (TOE usage usually requires that key features be disabled). Supported stateless offloads include Checksum, TSO, VMDq, and RSS. Host iSCSI /FCoE Initiators: Providing exceptional performance without the need for full-offload HBA2 methods. Flow Classification: Trafficking data flows across multiple consumers and connections. Manageability ALL0141-4SFP+-10Galso incorporate the manageability required by IT personnel for remote control and alerting. Communication to the Board Management Controller (BMC) is available either through an on-board SMBus port or the DMTF-defined NC-SI, providing a variety of management protocols, including IPMI, BMC Pass-thru, OS2BMC, and MCTP/SMBus and MCTP/PCIe. This adapter hosts Intel's latest Ethernet silicon, the Intel Ethernet Controller X540, which is used by many OEMs as a single chip solution for LAN on Motherboard (LOM) to deliver 10 Gigabit Ethernet(10 GbE) on the latest server platforms. 10GBASE-T Simplifies the Transition to 10 GbE The ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T works with existing networks today. It works with legacy Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switches and Cat 6A cabling. Install the ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter into a server and the auto-negotiation between 1 GbE and 10GbE provides the necessary backwards compatibility that most customers require for a smooth transition and easy migration to 10 GbE. When time and budget allows, 10GBASE-T switches can be added any time to experience the full benefits of 10GbE. 10GBASE-T uses the copper twisted pair cables that are very familiar to IT professionals today. It is everything you know and love about 1000BASE-T. The knowledge, training and investment in BASE-T are preserved. 10GBASE-T is the easiest and most versatile 10 GbE and you can deploy it anywhere in your data center. Its flexible reach from 1 meter to 100 meters supports the latest network architectures including Top of Rack (ToR), Middle of Row (MoR), and End of Row (EoR). 10G Performance at Low Cost and Low Power The ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter is the lowest cost way to deploy 10 GbE in your data center today. The ALL0139-2-10G-TX uses low cost, Cat 6 and Cat 6A cabling. Chances are this cabling already exists in the data center. A way for Intel to reduce cost and power is to integrate components into a single- chip solution. Of course, integration is what Intel does best. With the new Intel X540 Controller, the MAC and the PHY are integrated into a single-chip solution. So, why is integration important? First, integration translates to lower power. A single-chip solution simply uses less power than two separate components. This means no more active heat sink and reduces the per-port power consumption. Second, integration also means lower cost per port. Manufacturing a single part costs less than two. When cabling is accounted for, cost efficiencies realized from a single part mean 10GBASE-T is the lowest cost media to deploy. With lower cost and power, 10GBASE-T is ready for broad deployment. 10GBASE-T is an option for every rack and tower server in the data center. The wait for a low cost 10 GbE copper solution to broadly deploy 10 GbE to all corners of the data center is over. The ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter provides bandwidth-intensive applications with highly affordable 10 GbE network performance and cost-effective RJ-45 connectivity for distances up to 100 meters. Exciting New data Center usage Models More than simply a 10x increase in performance, with 10GbE there are exciting new usage models that are now possible, including Unified Networking (iSCSI, FCoE and LAN), Virtualization (VMDq and SR- IOV), and now, Flexible Port Partitioning (FPP). Flexible I/O Virtualization Virtualization changes the way server resources are deployed and managed by running multiple applications and operating systems independently on a single server. The ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter includes Intel Virtualization Technology for connectivity (Intel VT-c) to deliver I/O virtualization and Quality of Service (QoS) features designed directly into the Intel X540 controller on the adapter. Intel I/O virtualization advances network connectivity models used in today's servers to more efficient models by providing FPP, multiple Rx/Tx queues, and on-controller QoS functionality that can be used in both virtual and non-virtual server deployments. Flexible Port Partitioning (FPP) By taking advantage of the PCI-SIG SR-IOV specification, Intel Ethernet products enable FPP. With FPP, virtual controllers can be used by the Linux* host directly and/or assigned to virtual machines. FPP allows you to use the functionality of SR-IOV to assign up to 63 processes per port to virtual functions in Linux. This enables an administrator to partition their 10 GbE bandwidth across multiple processes, ensuring a QoS by giving each assigned process equal bandwidth. Network administrators may also rate-limit each of these services to control how much of the 10GbE pipe is available to each process. Unified Networking Unified Networking solutions on the ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter let you combine the traffic of multiple data center networks like LAN and SAN onto a single efficient network fabric. You now have the choice of NFS, iSCSI, or Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) to carry both network and storage traffic at speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The ALL0139-2-10G-TX 10GBase-T adapter combines support for all of these traffic types in one adapter at no additional cost and with no additional licensing fees for the adapter. Intel's Unified Networking solutions are enabled through a combination of standard Intel Ethernet products along with trusted network protocols integrated in the operating systems. Thus, Unified Networking is available on every Server either through LAN-on-Motherboard (LOM) implementation or via an add-in Network Interface Card (NIC). Intel has delivered high quality Ethernet products for over 30 years and our Unified Networking solutions are built on the original principles that made us successful in Ethernet: Open Architecture integrates networking with the server, enabling IT managers to reduce complexity and overhead while enabling a flexible and scalable data centre network. Intelligent offloads lower cost and power while delivering the application performance that customers expect. Proven Ethernet unified Networking is built on trusted Intel Ethernet technology, enabling customers to deploy FCoE or iSCSI while maintaining the quality of their traditional Ethernet networks. iSCSi Simplifies SAN Connectivity iSCSI uses Ethernet to carry storage traffic, extending the familiarity and simplicity of Ethernet to storage networking, without the need for SAN-specific adapters or switches. ALL0139-2-10G-TX is the easiest, most reliable, and most cost-effective way of connecting servers to iSCSI SANs. Open FCoE Consolidates LANs and Legacy SANs Intel's Open FCoE solution enables ALL0139-2-10G-TX (adapters and controllers) to support Fibre Channel payload encapsulated in Ethernet frames. There is no upgrade charge for Open FCoE on the adapter. Just as with iSCSI, now customers can easily connect to an FCoE network with Intel 10 GbE solutions. For the first time, Open-FCoE is now supported on 10GBASE-T. As 10GBASE-T switches come to market enabled with FCoE support, the ALL0139-2-10G-TX is ready when you're ready. This enables you to use cost-effective 10GBASE-T for all your converged networking needs. The Open- FCoE architecture uses a combination of FCoE initiators in Microsoft Windows*and Linux* operating systems and in the VMware* ESXi hypervisor to deliver high-performance FCoE solutions using standard 10 GbE Ethernet adapters. This approach enables IT managers to simplify the data center and standardize on a single adapter for LAN and SAN connectivity. The ALL0139-2-10G-TX is designed to fully offload the FCoE data path to deliver full-featured converged network adapter (CNA) functionality without compromising on power efficiency and interoperability Data Center Bridging (DCB) delivers Lossless Ethernet Conventional Ethernet does not guarantee successful data delivery, which is not acceptable for SAN traffic. Ethernet enhancements such as Data Center Bridging (DCB) overcome that limitation with technologies that guarantee lossless delivery, congestion notification, priority-based flow control, and priority groups. The combination of 10 GbE and unified networking helps organizations overcome connectivity challenges and simplify the data center infrastructure. 10 GbE provides a simple, well-understood fabric for virtualized data centers, one that helps reduce cost and complexity as the number of virtual machines continues to grow.
